Calibe

Imagine the meeting of dancehall/reggae with dance, pop, R&B, funk and jazz, presented with unforced, even laid back intensity, and you begin to get a sense of what Calibe brings to the musical table. She is a Jamaican-born, Miami-based Electro-Reggae vocalist with dark skin and pink and blonde dreadlocks. Her music is as hybrid as her image.

She is the result of an island upbringing in Kingston, Jamaica, saturated with such outside influences as Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder and Anita Baker.

Through an ongoing mentorship with legendary producers Sly and Robbie, she was enlisted to sing vocals for their track on Beenie Man’s Tropical Storm album. Calibe earned a spot accompanying the dancehall superstar on major tours incorporating Europe, Canada, the Caribbean and the United States.

She also toured with Caribbean crossover, Kevin Lyttle, who she has opened for in Europe and the US. “I learned a lot from the people I was touring with. By the time I moved from support vocals to opening act, I was already hungry and ready,” says Calibe. During this time she collaborated with producers including Salaam Remi, Kwame Holland, Troy Taylor and Richie D, and artists including Elephant Man and Junior Kelly.

Even while on an extended hiatus from the music business, she maintained a presence, working with Drop Di Bass Records, Shang Records, Kymani Marley, Sizzla, Spragga Benz and others from the world of dancehall and reggae. She reminisces, “Even when I felt like it might never happen, my ultimate dream has been to be singing on stage at the World Music Awards with the whole world singing along to a song I wrote and recorded. That’s my version of euphoria.”

In early 2009 she reconnected with Blackout Movement, a production team she had worked with on and off since moving to Miami in 2003. She has since become a Blackout Movement artist and is recreating a buzz with her soulful voice and focused mentality. Their single with rapper Ultimate entitled “It’s My Birthday” garnered hype throughout the US and was included on the Ultra Records annual compilation ‘Ultra 2011′. Her now more mature persona is resonating with a cross section of listeners and she feels like there is no limit to the distance her project can go. According to the lady herself, “I enjoy being an artist, but I’m aspiring to become an industry.”
